On Monday, Apple confirmed that its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus pre-order numbers broke records for the smartphone line, as they combined to rack up over four million purchases in the first 24 hours they were on sale. Apple's announcement confirmed many of those pre-orders won't ship to customers until October.

The news is hardly surprising. Each time a new iPhone model has come out, it has broken sales records. Apple last week announced two new iPhones, both with bigger screens than their predecessors: a 4.7-inch model called the iPhone 6, and a bigger, 5.5-inch model dubbed the iPhone 6 Plus.

"Pre-orders for iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus set a new record for Apple, and we can’t wait to get our best iPhones yet into the hands of customers starting this Friday,” said Apple chief executive Tim Cook.

How big a preorder record are we talking about? Two years ago, Apple said iPhone 5 preorders during the same initial 24 hour period were in the two-million range. Apple didn’t issue a press statement on iPhone 5s and 5c, both of which went on sale a year later in September 2013, but the iPhone 5s and 5c went on to sell nine million units during their opening weekend, breaking all prior initial weekend iPhone sales records

The four million pre-orders of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are double that of the iPhone 5's pre-order numbers within its first 24 hours.
