As IRAQ said above, I would suggest doing TDM to start with. It'll give you the chance to get used to the guns, the controls, and the general feeling of the game, without the trouble of having to deal with the vehicles.
But if for whatever reason you don't want to do TDM, there's also the option of Rush and Conquest. If you were a fan of the HQ game-type in COD, then Rush we'll probably be your thing. If you were more a fan of domination, then Conquest is your best bet.
When it comes to classes, what you really want to do is decide what your thing is. Do you want to be very much in the middle of the fight? Do you want to be an anti-vehicle player? Do you want to stay back and snipe? These are the kind of questions you need to ask yourself. While it's good to initially try out all the different classes, the best thing to do is pick one and dedicate yourself to it. As to begin with, all the classes will be weak, and it requires time and skill to actually rank them up and get better equipment and weapons.
When you decide it's time to try out the vehicles, which will come fairly soon I expect (as this is one of the main reason players move from COD to BF), you need to be easy on yourself. You won't be able to control them very easily, and you won't be able win fights against other vehicles very often. The fact of the matter is, they'll have more playing time in them, and better attachments. You'll most likely want to try out the jets, as they're often considered the most "cool" of the vehicles available... But the thing is, they're probably one of the hardest things to master in the game, and even when you get to the stage where you think you're 'ok', you'll still encounter players much better than you, who'll take you out without a second's warning. Even I, who has over 25 hours in the jets, and nearly 1k kills, still come across players who can simply out-play me due to their extra experience. The key is to understand when you're beaten, and accept it. Not try and fight it.
And lastly, be a good general player. I know you don't have to give out an ammo box, or wait for other players to get into your vehicle, but it's just the right thing to do. Unlike COD, it's very hard to be successful in this game without the support of your teammates... And if you don't treat them with respect, they wouldn't think twice about giving you any.
Anyway. Feel free to add me on PSN (Objectivate) if you're looking for someone to level up with.
