Post: Tips for bad/inexperienced players
08-18-2010, 03:25 PM #1
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey, I have seen a LOT of tips around this forum, most of them good, but I thought I would take some time to give my 2 cents. I'm a legit 10th Prestige and have got over 26 days of online play time, so my opinion is probably worth noting. I hope some of these tips help someone out Smile

I'll break these tips into categories.

Before you play

Turn up your brightness. It may give you a better chance at seeing enemies lurking in dark corners, for example the caves on Afghan. Don't turn it up all the way, but the text that says "Not visible" should be fairly clearly visible.

Turn off vibration. It will feel weird at first, and this may just be a personal preference but vibration distracts me, it tends to throw off my aim. If you're a bit sceptical then try it out for a few days and see if you notice a difference.

Turn up your sensitivity if you can handle it. It should be fairly obvious that higher sensitivity = the ability to react more quickly. However it is much more important that you are comfortable with your sensitivity. If you play on default, try putting it up to say, 5 or 6 and getting used to that. Personally I play on 10, but I don't recommend it for everyone. I know a lot of good players who play on 2 or 3 sensitivity, but I believe that the ability to control a high sensitivity will give you an advantage, particularly with sniping.

Change to Tactical button layout. It is so much better. Don't let anybody tell you that drop-shotting is nooby, in real life, if a soldier is fired on, he will take cover or if in an open area he will drop to the ground to make himself a smaller target. I guarantee this will save your life in MW2 and any CoD game very frequently, you will probably end up doing it automatically.

If you have an HD TV, play through HDMI. An HDMI cable costs only a few quid, so there's really no reason not to. You will notice a massive difference, especially if you play on a TV larger than 22 inches.

A headset will improve your play a lot. If you're determined to be a good player and take this game seriously, fork out £40 or so for some Turtle Beach X11's. If you become a better player and spend a lot of time playing, then you should consider paying more for a better headset, for example some Astros or Trittons.

I have been told about products called "FPS Freeks" which are extensions for your thumbsticks on the controller. I have never used them, but I hear they help a lot and make you more accurate, and they're cheap, so they're probably worth trying.

Sit on a chair, centred to the TV, in line with your eyes. This will make aiming easier.

Watch a lot of youtube videos. There are so many good people on there to watch that will give you valuable tips. There are people like zzirGrizz, aMOODIEswede and GUN1T123 who are good to watch for entertainment, but I'm talking about the guys who will give you tips and strategies and make videos to help people. I'll list a few of my favourites.

Weapons/Attachments/Classes

If you're inexperienced, you are best to stick with Assault Rifles. They are the dominant guns in the game, and do just about everything pretty well. Here's a good class for new players.

SCAR-H w/ Silencer
Spas-12 w/ Any attachment (other than a silencer)

Semtex
Stuns

Sleight of Hand Pro
Stopping Power Pro
Ninja Pro

Now let's examine the weapons and perks I've chosen. The SCAR is an accurate, high damage assault rifle, with the only drawback being the small clip size. This means you will probably only have enough rounds to kill maybe 2 enemies per clip, or 3/4 if you are accurate. The silencer means you no longer show up as a red dot on the map when you shoot your gun, so if you can be hidden then you can stay fairly stationary for a good period of time, before you move on. Playing defensively is playing smart, and will probably result in a more enjoyable experience. It is the only way a player with low technical ability should play in my opinion.

The Spas-12 is a reliable shotgun, and a good secondary for most situations. You won't get many hitmarkers with this if you're fairly close. It's the most powerful shotgun. Attachments don't have much effect on this gun, sights really don't make a difference, FMJ does nothing (apparently) and silencer turns it into a terrible gun. I suggest extended mags, but that takes 400 kills to unlock, so it's unlikely you will have it if you're a new player.

Sleight of Hand solves the problem of a small clip size by making reloading very fast. Scavenger is another good perk for the SCAR, but I think it gives you plenty of ammo for getting a fair few kills, so for newer players I would recommend SoH.

Stopping Power is the best 2nd perk in the game. Every time you shoot a gun with this equipped, your perk is doing work for you. There are a few guns it doesn't help much with, these are: TAR-21, UMP45 and the WA2000 (it actually has no effect whatsoever on this gun). If you're wondering what guns to use Stopping Power on, then guns with low fire rates tend to benefit most.

Ninja Pro is very useful, especially when playing slower-paced modes like Search and Destroy or Team Deathmatch, when players with headsets will be listening for your footsteps. You should use this on most classes, especially classes where you plan to be very mobile.

Semtex is easy to use and is powerful. Remember not to throw it over long distances e.g. over a building as it will probably explode before it reaches the target, as they have a 3 second fuse.

Don't use Grenade Launchers often. Not because they're annoying, but because they're easy to use, and relying on explosives will not let you improve as a player.

If something doesn't work for you, don't use it. Just because me or anybody else says it's good, that doesn't mean it's right for you. Experiment.

Remember some attachments and perks just do not work well for some guns. If you use a silencer, stopping power is usually a good idea.

It can be helpful to have one silenced weapon and one unsilenced weapon. Use a silenced weapon if you can when you are far away from your team mates, or if you're engaging several enemies who are unaware of your presence. Use an unsilenced weapon at long range or when you're with your team.

Gameplay tips

Use your stuns as lookouts. If you're heading round a corner, throw one. If it gets a hitmarker, there's a guy round there, so take out a shotgun, throw another stun and go get him.

Don't take shots you won't hit. If you notice a guy just as he runs out of sight, don't shoot the wall after him. The best option here is probably to let him go, or tell your team-mates where he's gone. Spending time chasing an enemy gets you killed a lot.

Don't go for revenge kills. If you get killed by somebody camping at the top of stairs, don't run back there! Find a smart way to take him out without risking yourself, or move on. Campers will only camp if there are people running to them.

Team-mates can help and hinder. Look at your map, if you see a big blob of green arrows, stay behind it if you're playing cautious, or far away from it if you're playing aggressive. You can judge roughly where the other team will spawn by looking at your team-mates. You will learn this better as you gain experience. Remember the enemy team will know where your team are a lot of the time, that is where the rockets/nades will tend to fly. If they have a UAV, stay close to your team-mates as the enemy is less likely to distinguish your position from your team-mates, and there is safety in numbers.

That just about sums it up for today, I may edit this at some point and add some more. I know it was a long post and if you've made it this far then thank you for reading! If I helped you at all or think what I've said could be useful to others, I would appreciate any thanks/rep you decide to give, I put a lot of time and effort into this! Also if you think I missed out anything vital, go ahead and say, I'll add it in and give you rep and credit in the post. Also if I made a mistake please let me know Smile I've read over this and everything looks okay but I could have missed something.

Happy gaming =D

Very nice thread mate. A lot of time and effort has gone into this. I will thank your post tomorrow as i haven't got any +rep left. And you can add the blue tack tip. Place a dot of blue tack in the middle of your cross hair. it helps for accuracy and quick scoping.

Thanks very much mate.

As for your blu-tac tip, it's good for learning to quick-scope, but in the long run I think it is much more beneficial just to do it normally. I'm going to edit this tomorrow and I'll probably include it, cheers.

Yeah, it really is aimed at newer players, just trying to do my bit in encouraging intelligent play and trying to cut down on people relying on cheap tactics. I'm glad you like it Smile

Tactical button layout is awesomeeee =D

Good thread.
It should help anyone who recently started playing.
If they have been playing since November, they may be beyond help.
You might mention some killstreak options for an inexperienced player.
Advise against 7,11,25 and go for 3,4,5 or 5,7,9.
Again it was a good thread.
Good advice without sounding like a know it all, do it my way guy.

Before I start, I'll say that it was a great thread.

I wouldn't turn brightness up too high, as although it allows you to see people in darker places, it ruins visibility on maps such as Afgahn ect. Also, unless you rush every map, I'd recommend using a 4-7 sensitivity. It still allows you to turn quickly, but greatly improves accuracy at range. Smile
