to stay safe i would say 2tbs if your not interested in databanks

Maximum for internal is 4 TB, but there aren't any drives made to match the proper size, so we're currently stuck with a maximum of 2 TB.
Maximum for external is currently 8 TB.

Just get an external; less hassle. Plug and play. I've got a 4TB external and it works a treat.
