Windows 10 will be a free upgrade, but only for the first year of its existence. That includes upgrades from Windows 8.1 and Windows 7, along with smartphones running Windows Phone 8.1. Once you’ve updated your device, Microsoft says it will keep the software current for its “supported lifetime.”

It’s a smart move from Microsoft, which struggled to convince people to upgrade to Windows 8 when it first launched. There’s still no word on when the Windows 10 update will actually become available, but we’ll let you know as soon as that news is announced.

Smart idea with most software companies already doing it.

hmmmm... I have a question:

I am an university student, so I can download the windows systems from the Microsoft Dreamspark.

If I download and install the Windows 8. Will I have the Windows 10 for free if I upgrade??

I'm a god.
You can now upgrade to the technical preview, but wouldn't really recommend it.

Dreamspark licenses are usually different in terms of being able to upgrade. I would probably ask that here:You must login or register to view this content.
