Worth the Weight
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); We all know of the recent problems that have been arising in the current administration in the United States with regards to wiretapping of citizens. Just a few days ago there was a court order forcing Verizon to hand over phone records to the government, along with Edward Snowden and his leaking of what the NSA does. Some people think that it's okay because they have "nothing to hide", while others see this as infringing on the rights of American citizens. What is your take on this, are you okay with the government collecting phone records about you and reading your e-mails? Please note that court orders must be obtained, however the method of obtaining these is very relaxed and are usually not justified on any evidence. Meaning that yes, they can 100% listen to your conversations if they wanted to, without notifying you of any sort of charge or accusation.

Discuss.

I disapprove massively. We're paying our governments to spy on us en masse... I mean really, what the f*ck?

The road to hell is paved with good intentions. That's definitely the road we're going down at the moment.

Hm, this is a really tough question. You see, you're trying to maximize your security and safety, with the loss of your privacy. The US Gov is saying that they've stopped an incredible amount of terrorist plots, which I don't doubt. But what they aren't telling us is that they've been following these suspected terrorists for some time to collect enough information to stop these attacks. It's not like wiretapping a Joe Blow and stopping a terrorist attack, it doesn't happen. This is really tough because at one side, I want to feel safe (even if I know at an intellectual level that I'm really not,) but at the same time I don't want my rights infringed, because it'll come to a point where the Government will push further and further into our rights to the point where our 4th Amendment will be gone. Benjamin Franklin said, "Those Who Sacrifice Liberty For Security Deserve Neither," and I truly agree with him. So it's just a matter of balancing our rights to privacy with our rights to safety.

well first I don't know if the actual "listening on calls" is true because they just said they're keeping records of who you call and to how long. Now I totally agree with that Snowden fellow. We give the government wayyy to much information so what's the problem with getting a little info back? It's a too way street and it just goes to show how people have to be better than others by knowing more then them. They always have to have the upper hand...

Good thing I don't live in 'Murica'. For security reasons like averting a terrorist attack or very suspicious people <cough> <cough> the Tsarnaevs I have no objections. However, everyday mundane situations they shouldn't be allowed direct access into people's lives.

I'm wondering if that video is scripted, but if it isn't then the camera guy should've bailed like a lightning bolt
