As of now the date doesn't mean much and we assumed it would be a reveal date for our first glimpse of Black Ops 2.
It's gone one step further and is said to be the date that preorders can be made on the so far unannounced game.

It's no surprise Treyarch were developing a new Call of Duty and had kept the details on the downlow for a while.
Mw3 first went on preorder on the March 16th so these are fairly similar dates.

This is a advertisement Stand which was found at a GameStop store. It features the same image and message with the white boxes... What could these be for? My guess is that there will be pre-order cases to be used to pre-order the game.

That's right "Eclipse"? Could that possibly be related to the title of the new game?
Let's be honest Treyarch has been more imaginative with their game names and haven't just added a number on the end, so there is a high chance that we could see "Call of duty: Eclipse" being revealed shortly.

So looks like we can expect more than just a reveal on the May 2nd and our first chance to pre-order the game.

However this doesn't exactly mean you should jump the gun and pre-order as no news yet on other versions of the game.

I'm just happy we are finally going to see out first glimpse of what Treyarch has been developing.

but Eclipse just sounds a little off for a COD title.

I would wait a bit before pre-ordering, because the MW3 Hardened Edition was announced some time after initial pre-orders started. I don't know how your store works, but my local gamestore wouldn't allow pre-orders of the hardened edition until it was revealed.
