Bluehole’s new limited-time mode Platoon was set to debut this weekend for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. However, the developer has confirmed via its official PUBG Help Twitter that the event is cancelled due to a “critical error”. It won’t arrive next week either, but will “return at a later date”.

“PC Players: Unfortunately, this week’s Event Mode has been cancelled due to a critical error. We apologize for any frustration or disappointment this has caused. Event Mode: Platoon will not be returning next week, but will return at a later date,” says the tweet. The event itself was meant to last until Sunday evening (PST), so this is kind of a bummer for players.

Platoon was to be a new take on squad-based play. Taking place on Erangel, the mode would have five squads with 10 players each. This isn’t the first time that a Battle Royale title would have squads of more than four players (see Fortnite’s 50v50 mode), however, it would have been interesting to see how PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds handled it.

Though Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 released recently, garnering $500 million in sales in three days, its Blackout mode hasn’t hurt PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds too badly. Despite a declining player base on Steam, Bluehole’s title still hit 938,867 players as of today’s peak.
