Personally, I think it would be ideal if there was a standard that could be set, where if someone was a jerk to (x) degree, it should be legal to punch them. However, since it is impossible to create an objective and accurate scale for this, I think that there are a few things that could possibly justify a punch (not to say that these would, could, or should be enforced):
(The following criterion are assuming both people are men)
1. If a man throws a punch without any rational justification.
2. If a man intentionally insults another's family (any family member).
3. If a man kills another's family member(given).
4. If a man seduces another's spouse.
5. If a man intentionally injures another's family member (any family member).
6. If a man directly curses/dishonors the name of another's best friend.
7. If a man injures or kills another's pet (Dog or Cat only, sorry, other pets seem like less of a reason to throw a punch)
8. If a man threatens another's family or friends.
9. If a man strikes a woman.
10. If a man directly states that he's going to kill himself.
As I said, these are not objective and can't be accurate, but these are my personal feelings on the matter.
Prepost edit: I realized I actually forgot about self defense. :embarrassed: in terms of self defense, I think the only time that it is justified to fight back is when you can't win. It is only okay to fight back in a fight that is unfair to you. (i.e. outclassed, outnumbered, if the other person has a weapon, etc.)
those laws will never pass , but honestly their some jack @$$ out there that just really aggravate you . If some one has lets say a knife and its at your neck you can fight back . By outclassed you mean like someone heavier that you are?

I know that most states have laws where you can use deadly force to protect yourself and family if your life is threatened. In Michigan, you have the right in your home if your threatened to use deadly force.
Now the reason most fist-fights involve both parties getting into trouble with the law, is because it's just that a fist fight. If it's 6 on 1 then I'm sure a judge would let you off the hook; or if they had a weapon and you were unarmed it's understandable.
``But if both people are unarmed and it's a fair fight, one could always run away.
when i mean self-defense i do mention a lot fist fighting . However your welcome to add/take away from my opinion. If its 6 v 1 i am pretty sure you can fight back legally (Dont quote me on this, not 100% sure) . If someone has a Firearm or a blade then you can 100% fight back if you please. But if it is a " fair fight". Then its considered battery , but honestly running away some times only adds more to your problems . If you really want to avoid the fight just call any authority. Running away hurts your pride and that person will catch you off guard.
