Utopia: A place, state, or condition that is ideally perfect in respect of politics,
laws, customs, and conditions.

Dystopia: A futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and
the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic,
technological, moral, or totalitarian control. Dystopias, through an exaggerated
worst-case scenario, make a criticism about a current trend, societal norm, or
political system.

Characteristics of a Dystopian Society

• Propaganda is used to control the citizens of society.
• Information, independent thought, and freedom are restricted.
• A figurehead or concept is worshipped by the citizens of the society.
• Citizens are perceived to be under constant surveillance.
• Citizens have a fear of the outside world.
• Citizens live in a dehumanized state.
• The natural world is banished and distrusted.
• Citizens conform to uniform expectations. Individuality and dissent are bad.
• The society is an illusion of a perfect utopian world.

Types of Dystopian Controls
Most dystopian works present a world in which oppressive societal control and the
illusion of a perfect society are maintained through one or more of the following

types of controls:
• Corporate control: One or more large corporations control society through
products, advertising, and/or the media. Examples include Minority Report
and Running Man.

• Bureaucratic control: Society is controlled by a mindless bureaucracy through
a tangle of red tape, relentless regulations, and incompetent government
officials. Examples in film include Brazil.

• Technological control: Society is controlled by technology—through
computers, robots, and/or scientific means. Examples include The Matrix,
The Terminator, and I, Robot.

• Philosophical/religious control: Society is controlled by philosophical or
religious ideology often enforced through a dictatorship or theocratic
government.

The Dystopian Protagonist
• often feels trapped and is struggling to escape.
• questions the existing social and political systems.
• believes or feels that something is terribly wrong with the society in which he
or she lives.
• helps the audience recognizes the negative aspects of the dystopian world
through his or her perspective.

Too many big words! Lol, just kidding. I hope it does not. This would be a very scary and harsh time to live. The government seems to be taking over your life, watching every move. Life would be virtual and/or an illusion, full of dullness. This reminds me of two things: One, the quest on Fallout 3 called, "Tranquility Lane". That is the quest where you must enter Vault 112 and enter a simulator. Once, you enter that simulator, you are in the most perfect and wonderful 1950's dream place. Second, the movie, "Surrogates". Surrogates is set in a futuristic world where humans live in isolation and interact through surrogate robots. A cop is forced to leave his home for the first time in years in order to investigate the murders of others' surrogates. There is a scene where (If I remember) his wife doesn't want to escape the virtual world, due to her "perfect" life.

Hope not.

If I witnessed that progressing, the first sign of this happening would cause me to evacuate.

It's already begun. You're(and we're) all being monitored and drip-fed news that the government only wants us to see. If it weren't for independent leaks (think: Wikileaks) we'd be so very much more in the dark than we already are. I'm not even gonna bother with how falsely patriotic people are.

Do a barrel roll!
We already are in a dystopian society and have been for I say thousands of years. Its so obvious now but people are in denial and are scared to face the truth.Either that or they're too "busy" to really sit down and observe whats really going on. Humanity is at a fork in a road, we can either wake up and take our power back, or we can stay sleep and when we do finally wake up, it'll be like George Orwells 1984. All the characteristics you stated are all happening right now especially the figurehead worship. (Obama, the Queen)

1984 was an amazing book.

Your right, that's exactly how the government works.

And by the way, were you talking about how I was being falsely patriotic?

And if so, well.......Gaspkay:

You're right there's a good example happening right now, they are not covering what is happening right now on Spain called S25. Maybe they are scare of that non-violent revolutionary act?

No, it was just a generic statement. I think it applies to about 80-90% of the people I've come across. The jubilee here in England was f*cking unbearable... :jim:
