Okay, let me cut into this discussion right now.
Here is the first thing I made in GIMP, ever:

Videobot, you can't ever judge someone on their work in relation to how long they've been working. I've seen people (like me) who take years for aesthetics to click and start making good art, and these people are exponentially better than I am and probably ever will be. On the same hand, I've seen people knock out tags like me newest after a month using Photoshop, but never get any better. Judge an artist by the canvas.
Now, onto you, Lahmanja. Just in general, I can see that you have some definite idea of what you're doing, but not all of your knowledge translates into your work. For instance, the tag in your signature has good use of lights and darks in the background, and good directionality. Unfortunately, the focal is too dark compared to the background and gets lost in it; the colors are monochrome, and end up being very boring to look at; the text is big, placed awkwardly and has no artistic meaning on the canvas.
I'm hard-pressed to believe your graphic design professor hasn't stressed typography as being one of - if not the - most important aspect in a piece of design.
But of course, with time comes practice, and with practice comes evolution. Build off what you have now. In your next tag try to incorporate more colors, and smartly - maybe try the old standby blue/orange (a simple introduction here:
