I have DSL right now. The company advertises 5mbps but I get around 2.5mbps. The same company has Cable internet for a few bucks extra offering 10mbps. Obviously the cable internet seems better because its double the speed for only a little extra. But whats the difference between the two types of internet in terms of performance and possible down time? Is there any information that companies usually hide that I should ask about?

here is something copied from one of the web pages when u google it:
Speed
Cable modems are generally faster than DSL. According to Cable-Modem.net, DSL provides download speeds of 10 megabytes per second, while cable modems can download up to 50 or 60 megabytes per second. However, as the Information Services and Technology Department at MIT notes, cable networks are broadcast oriented, which means your Internet connection is shared with neighbors and your connection may be slower during high traffic periods. Connection speeds on DSL may also be affected by certain conditions. According to Cable-Modem.net, DSL is a "distance-sensitive" technology, meaning that the further you are from your phone company's central location, the more your speed will suffer.
Security
Because a cable modem Internet connection is shared with neighbors, you must be extra vigilant in setting up security measures like firewalls and passwords. A DSL connection is very secure because it is a dedicated line used only by you

Depends on how far away you are from the internet exchange. If you are far away you wont get as fast speeds with DSL but with cable it doesn't matter how far you are away. If your close then get Bethere. Lets take Virgin into account. They offer 50Mbit packages and on average they say their customers get 47Mbits. I am with Virgin and i get what i pay for. This off course is if you are in the UK.
