What is a jailbreak?

Many smartphone, tablet, and game console makers include a layer of Digital Rights Management (DRM) software on their products. This DRM exists either to limit the software you can run on it, or is there for security reasons. Jailbreaking is the process of hacking these devices to bypass DRM restrictions, allowing you to run "unauthorized" software and to make other tweaks to your operating system.

More technically, jailbreaking can be thought of as the process of installing "a modified set of kernel patches (the kernel being the supervisor of the operating system) that allow you to run unsigned code," as Saurik explains. It also gives you root-level access, which is otherwise unavailable. The term "root" comes from UNIX, where it is the superuser account that has unrestricted rights and permissions to all files. This provides you with added flexibility, but it also has some inherent dangers (more on that later).

You can alter or install anything onto your phone or tablet such as UI hacks (like the 5-icon dock) or unofficial apps (like classic console emulators) that would not otherwise be accepted into the App Store. Saurik's alternative app store, called Cydia, is arguably the definitive repository of such apps or tweaks. Cydia is so ubiquitous in iOS jailbreaking circles that most jailbreak tools install it automatically.

Take a not of the software version the device is on.

*Please note, most of the websites will tell you how to jailbrake. Also back up ALL of your data incase anything does go wrong.

What to do after I've jailbroken my iOS device?

Congratulations if you're just jailbroken your iOS device. Welcome to the world of freedom!

Newer jailbreaks now install the APT graphical fronted and third party app store Cydia, created by Jay Freeman (saurik) that allows you to install unofficial apps and tweaks to your device. You can also add other repositories to find even more great content to enhance your experience with iOS.

Whether it be to theme your device, change certain existing features or gain new ones, Cydia is your one stop shop for all that. Some of mine and the community's favourite tweaks and repositories can be found in the next section.

Repositories AKA Repo's

Cydia works by acquiring a package list from each repository installed on your device and then organising the list into a scrollable list of installable packages on your device. However, you aren't stuck with the default repositories, so I've added some of my personal favourites below which you can add to Cydia by going into the Sources tab> Edit > Add.

xSellize
Repo address: You must login or register to view this content. or You must login or register to view this content.
xSellize is a great repository, especially for cracked Cydia addons that normally charge to install. It has a wide variety of skins and themes for your devices too.

Insanelyi

Repo address You must login or register to view this content.

Insanelyi has worked its way up through the list to become one of the top repos on Cydia. It contains thousands of different tweaks, mods and themes, virtually anything you are looking for.

BiteYourApple

Repo adress You must login or register to view this content.

BiteYourApple is home to quite a few popular mods and ringtones, apps that don’t really do a great deal to make your device work any better, just look and sound good.

SinfuliPhone

Repo address You must login or register to view this content.

A suspect name does not necessarily make for a suspect repository. This one is home to a lot of genuine tweaks, although it does have its fair share of those that are pirate as well. It does have the added bonus of being the one place where you will find some very tweaks that you can’t get anywhere else.

Is Jailbreaking Legal?

Its legal status is affected by laws regarding circumvention of digital locks, such as laws protecting digital rights management (DRM) mechanisms. Many countries do not have such laws, and some countries have laws including exceptions for jailbreaking.

Glossary

Confused about what a term means? Here's an index of them.

APT - Advanced Packaging Tool. Debian's (and Cydia's) packaging tool involved in installing and removing software.

Baseband - Controls all operations that make use of the antenna. Has it's own RAM and firmware in NOR flash.

Bootloader - Runs right before the main OS starts, and performs signature checks. It also loads the OS.

Bootrom - Also known as SecureROM. First significant code that executes upon boot. Read only. If a bootrom exploit is found, it will last the entire lifespan of the device.

Cydia - The graphical fronted for APT created by Jay Freeman (Saurik). Named after Cydia Pomonella, the name of the traditional apple worm.

Jailbreak - The name given to the method of removing your device from Apple's "jail".

Kernel - The core of the OS. Functions as a bridge between applications and the data processing done at hardware level.

OTA - Over the air. Refers to over the air updating added in iOS 5.

Respring The process of restarting the Springboard application.

Semi-tethered jailbreak - A jailbreak that lacks the initial code execution to allow you to reboot into jailbreak mode, but does allow you to reboot into normal mode. Only requires a computer to boot into jailbreak mode.

Springboard - The name of the application that functions as the home screen.

Tethered jailbreak - A jailbreak that lacks the initial code execution to allow you to reboot into jailbreak mode. Devices with tethered jailbreaks require a computer to complete to boot sequence (by pwning the kernel).

Unlock - A method of unlocking your device to other carriers.

Untethered jailbreak - A jailbreak that includes the initial code execution to allow you to reboot into jailbreak mode.
