Microsoft is announcing a big new feature for Xbox owners today: cross-network play. It's something the software giant has hinted at for years, and now it seems the reality of PS4, Xbox One, and PC players playing the same game together might finally happen. Developers building games for Xbox One and Windows 10 will be able to support the feature, but it will require Sony and others to "participate" in order for games to be played across Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Rocket League will be one of the first titles to support the new cross-network play, and Microsoft notes there is an "open invitation for other networks to participate as well," strongly hinting that Sony or other console manufacturers could enable gamers to play their friends regardless of what device they're using.

If developers and console makers get behind Microsoft's support of cross-network play then it will change the shape of games in the future. Currently, console gamers are restricted to playing titles on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, and many pick an Xbox One or PS4 based on what their friends purchased. Opening up online multiplayer gaming across different platforms will remove a big restriction in console gaming, but it will also create a conversation around which titles should allow PC gamers to play against consoles. A mouse and keyboard can still have many advantages over a gamepad for first-person shooters, so it's a new challenge that game developers will have to balance for cross-network play.

Well Xbox One needs a unified gaming platform more than Sony does at the moment, but it would be nice to be able to play certain games between Xbox and PS4 players.

Both need it if they want to carry on makes no sense having two walled gardens

Sony is far more open with things like this than Miscrosoft. Just take a look at portal 2 which required steam on the console. Sony was fine with it but Microsoft didn't want to play ball. Fast forward to PS4. We have cross platform with Street Fighter, Rocket league and Final Fantasty 14.

Granted this isn't anything new. There has been cross platform games before.

For instance
Final Fantasy 11
PS2, PC , xbox 360 (granted the console support is getting dropped this month)

It will be interesting to see how they decide to do this. Things like FPS's just wont work. Microsoft already did a study on this. You must login or register to view this content.
I doubt they would go back and reverse their decision on that for these types of games.

One of the main reasons that people may dissent the idea of a unified platform is that PC gamers would have an advantage over console players.

I really only think that is true for FPS's. I could be wrong. Some would argue that MMO's would be hard but Final fantasy 14 is a pretty good example that it can work and it can be enjoyable with a controller. It was a huge improvement over Final Fantasy 11 on the console. It just felt horrible.

Games like fighting, racing, and sports I think could work out just fine.

I don't know about playing against PC-Players... Gamepad vs. Mouse/Keyboard isn't really fair in my opinion.

This is great! But I really don't want to play against PC-Players in Ego-Shooters... Gamepad vs Mouse/Keyboard isn't really fair.
