Microsoft is announcing a big new feature for Xbox owners today: cross-network play. It's something the software giant has hinted at for years, and now it seems the reality of PS4, Xbox One, and PC players playing the same game together might finally happen. Developers building games for Xbox One and Windows 10 will be able to support the feature, but it will require Sony and others to "participate" in order for games to be played across Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

Rocket League will be one of the first titles to support the new cross-network play, and Microsoft notes there is an "open invitation for other networks to participate as well," strongly hinting that Sony or other console manufacturers could enable gamers to play their friends regardless of what device they're using.

If developers and console makers get behind Microsoft's support of cross-network play then it will change the shape of games in the future. Currently, console gamers are restricted to playing titles on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live, and many pick an Xbox One or PS4 based on what their friends purchased. Opening up online multiplayer gaming across different platforms will remove a big restriction in console gaming, but it will also create a conversation around which titles should allow PC gamers to play against consoles. A mouse and keyboard can still have many advantages over a gamepad for first-person shooters, so it's a new challenge that game developers will have to balance for cross-network play.

Being able to play with your friends no matter what console (or PC) they are on would be amazing. However I do see multiple problems. The first and foremost is party chat. Now im sure that there is SOME way to get a PS4 and Xbox One to join the same party, but it sure isn't a feature on either console right now. Not being able to communicate with your friends is almost (note I said almost) as bad as not being able to play with them. The advantage gained is you know your friend's playstyles so you can predict their moves, even if you aren't actively communicating. Another problem would be cross-network game friend requests, messages, and the like. I can't imagine the PS4 and Xbox one handle these things the same way, so it would take many thousands of lines of code to get this working.

The controller vs KB/M debate has been going on for YEARS. Most people are said to be at a disadvantage vs a KB/M if they have a controller. Whilst there is some proof to this (i.e. try sniping with a controller vs a KB/M and then tell me which is easier to make precise adjustments with) it has never really been tested on a mass scale. Im sure matches of controllers vs KB/M have happened, but can you say millions of controller users faced millions of KB/M users across multiple first person shooters? No. In my opinion, it is a personal preference, and there are advantages, as well as disadvantages for both sides.

All that being said, please let this happen. Of my group of friends from high school, there is only a single person left who doesnt have a ps4, and thats because he has a xbox one. I hope this happens quickly (even though I know it wont) because when it does, my whole friend group from high school will be able to play Rocket League together and its so much fun with those guys.

Do a barrel roll!
I have been waiting for this for forever because all my friends are Xbone users and it would be great to play Borderlands or something together without having to make a new character for themselves on my Playstation.
