minecraft doesnt really have a point but to survive. but with the new 1.8 update you have the choice between creative or survival mode, and in the upcoming 1.9 update hardcore mode will be added.
pretty much in survival mode (common mode) you just build a home, mine, hunt and survive. its as simple as that.
if your new, i suggest watching a lets play series to learn how to play bit by bit. it helped me out ALOT when i started playing.
