Earlier today, Google announced their latest Android OS, which will be the successor for the current 'Froyo' OS. Aside from another lovely and unusual title, Google has noted some improvements that will be coming with this new OS.
Such improvements include a better interface, text input, power management, and newer features such as internet calling, download management, and so on. It will also be featuring an improved camera, with something many Android users considered well needed: a front-facing camera (if available).

What is most important here is that Google has optimized this new operating system for gaming, by increasing responsiveness in applications and in the keyboard. This will allow games not only to be played easier without having to worry about the keyboard freezing up, but will ensure that the games themselves respond. Application response has been a problem for some Android users in the past.
Additionally, new sensors including the gyroscope have been added, allowing for improved 3D motion processing. On top of that, the OS will feature improved graphics and audio.
Gaming is something that in the past has only scratched the service of the cell phone world, but has never been prominent. Google seems to be taking the initiative here, in what may alter the usage of phones and what they can be used for drastically. Whether the gaming market will be something to succeed in the cell phone world will be determined in the time to come.
