By now most of you know about SOPA and PIPA, the bills that could sensor the internet. Petitions to stop this bill began going around the web around October of last year. Sadly only people that spent hours everyday on the internet knew about them, so not too many people spoke against them and the bills were able to advance to the house of representatives. There, the bill gained many supporters and became a real threat to the freedom of the internet.

With these bills gaining so many followers something had to be done. Petitions were not enough and some people started giving ideas to protest by showing people how the bill would affect them. Wikipedia made the decision to block the english version of their encyclopedia. Instead of just blocking it with a black image, they decided to include some text explaining why they were protesting and how people could join the protest. Many other sites did the same exact thing and some just told the users about the issue. With so many people signing petitions and calling their representatives in congress, some of them stopped supporting the bills and switched sides to go against these bills. So far seventeen representatives have switched sides, and the bills have lost a lot of popularity in congress. Obama's administration has also spoken about the bills and they have decided to go against it.

This is still not a victory, but it's an important step against these bills. This also showed the power the internet has and how influential can be, even in the US government.

Think they vote on them on the 24th.
Edit:
but on January 17 Chairman Smith said that "[d]ue to the Republican and Democratic retreats taking place over the next two weeks, markup of the Stop Online Piracy Act is expected to resume in February."

From Wiki Awesome face.

I really don't think SOPA will pass. Just think how many people would lose jobs because the website they work for closes down. I don't think the government wants any more unemployed walking around. No
