Although it is some days old news, after 16 years of some of the first online play on a console, Sony has shut down the last official ps2 server. Final Fantasy XI being the last game to be run online for the ps2 console.

RIP Ps2
(March 4, 2000 - March 31, 2016)

(Manufactured and Distributed 2000-2013)

This does not mark the complete end of ps2. Even before the end was considered, there have been methods of running aftermarket servers for some consoles, ps2 being one of them..

Isn't it kind of sad Sal and even more so to think the ps3 will end some day as well Sal

I never played ps2 online (but I played with friends) but it is sad to see the 'death' of one of my childhood memories.

Apparently this is only true for the NA version of the game. According to their forum post:

So the Japan version is apparently still up.

Well the PC version uses the same account. Since the PC, PS2 and Xbox 360 all used the same servers.
