That $800 price point is if you buy the phone off contact.

Go to your local carriers store and tell them you want to buy the iPhone 6 Plus, but you don't want a new contract, or add a line and that you don't have an upgrade.

They'll then tell you it'll be $800.

Fun fact it costs Apple a FRACTION of that to make these phones. On a bad day it costs Apple 200USD to make a iPhone...so consider that when you pay for their products.
