I have a PS3 on firmware 3.41 and it doesn't read discs because the blu-ray stopped working but I can obviously put patches on there.
But to get to my point of this thread, is what can I do with it?
Is it better to have a PS3 on 3.41 or should I update my PS3 to 3.55 and then put a CFW on there?

Whats the point of keeping it if it cant read disks? What will you do with it?

It's not really useful for much other than data transfers and backups... I know from experience... But if you have Netflix, I'd go to 3.55 and use the Kmeaw CFW.

Yes you should update to 3.55cfw and from there you can get custom programs using your USB flash drive that allow you to play games without the use of Disk. You can get a Bluray reader for your PC allowing you to copy whole Games onto it. After you do that you can get FTPserver (A file manager that allows your ps3 to transfer its files to and from your computer; this is one of the many programs that 3.55cfw enables) and from there games can be saved onto your HDD so I hope you have plenty of space for all of those games you will accumulate.
If you don't want to get a Bluray reader or don't have the means of buying one then you can find a few websites which are made especially for geohot's 3.55cfw that you can download whole games onto your flashdrive to be played on your ps3.
There are actual tutorials on the internet if you wish to discover more.
