(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Where It All Began

It all started at the beginning of the year when renowned hacker George Hotz (GeoHot, 21 years old), infamous for the iPhone and iPod Touch jailbreak, managed to actually jailbreak the PS3 system along with the hacking group (fail0verflow) and released the root key of the system online for anyone to access and make use of. The release of the root key and jailbreak would of course help ameliorate the process of making the PS3 prone to piracy, something that Sony does not like at all as it would cause software revenue to crash. The whole hacking process came as a result of Sony previously removing one of the touted features of the PS3, called “Other OS”, which enabled users to actually download and install a linux partition onto their PS3 and turn it from a console to an actual computer. Sony blamed the removal of the feature on security concerns, meaning hackers (AKA GeoHot) taking advantage of Linux’s open nature to access the internal system of the machine. The removal caused an enormous uproar from the PS3 community in which users started to scrutinize Sony on their hypocritical behavior, touting the openness of their system in one hand, and removing the one thing that actually gave users the benefit of the open nature of the machine. And here things started to go down.

1, 2, 3... Fight!

Sony decided to take the case to court. They sued GeoHot on breach of security and demanded that he immediately cease all forms of hacking of their devices and to hand over all used instruments and software used in the process. GeoHot decided that he would not give up easily. After which started a three month long legal battle (January-March) between the manufacturing giant and 21 year old, during which the court actually granted for Sony to access the list of all IPs that had accessed GeoHot’s website to download all the software needed to jailbreak the PS3, and was even granted access to his paypal account to see all account transactions that relate to the hack.
Thankfully Sony and GeoHot settled at the end of March out of court, with GeoHot bound by a permanent injunction that forbids him from “trafficking in any technology” that “circumvents any of the TPM’s in any Sony product,” including any sort of decryption code. This outcome does send out a profound warning to anyone who might even think of hacking a Sony product and would in turn ensure Sony a worry free future. However, the worst was yet to come.

Even though the court case was over, and all seemed to be peachy, people were still displeased with the outcome of the case. A lot of the world’s hackers found that the lawsuit and outcome were a breach of rights, specifically the fact that you actually own what you buy. Some were pleased to have the lawsuit behind them, but others saw it only as the beginning, particularly the world renowned hacker group “Anon” or Anonymous. We have previously heard of their name about a year ago when they attacked the various websites of PayPal and MasterCard for helping the US government track down Bradley Manning in the WikiLeaks controversy. Who are they? Well, they are people just like you and me, who are particularly proficient in programming and simply roam the internet having fun. They govern the famous memes birth place, “4chan”, which many refer to as the “trash of the internet”. They have done many-a-great-things for the benefit of the innocent, but sometimes things just go too far.

What to do?
Should you worry?
I know what many of you are wondering. “Is my account information safe?”. Well, knowing Sony and their panel of network security engineers, I am sure that there will be nothing to worry about, especially since Sony actually took the network offline and thus malicious hackers have no access to any of the information stored on the servers (Address, Credit Card, etc…Winky Winky. Moreover, Sony have had a history of account hackings back in 2008 and 2009 in which they immediately contacted concerned parties and individuals and informed them of the situation.
What to do in meantime?
Easter is here, many of us are on vacation from our hectic School/University/Work schedule. Sure, multiplayer on the PS3 is no where to be seen as of now, but you can use the spare time you to:

* Spend some quality time with the family. Go out, see a movie, do a picnic, enjoy a family lunch, see your girlfriend, or try to get a girlfriend if you are single. Maybe do your homework (God forbid) or work report. Or maybe sleep, and make up for all those lost hours during the week.

* Go through your “unfinished” gaming catalogue and finish the single player of many of the awesome games that came out in the recent months. My suggestions? Enjoy Portal 2’s magnificently wonderful and hilarious campaign (Review coming shortly by the way). Hone your skills in Mortal Kombat for when the network is back up you can wipe the floor with Sub-Zero or Scorpion, or maybe even Kratos. Play some Mass Effect 2 and experience one of the best Role-Playing Games of recent history. These are just a few of my suggestions, and if you want more ask in the comments.

You must login or register to view this content.
Brutality + Blood + Mortal Kombat = Endless Fun

* Enjoy some good old fashioned local multiplayer via split-screen or LAN. Invite some friends over and have a blast playing the newly introduced Co-op mode in Portal 2, or maybe some brutal laughter in Mortal Kombat, or maybe some 2-on-2 Call of Duty split-screen.

* Steam, and XBL (X-Box Live) are still up and running fine, so if you own any of the other counterparts feel free to enjoy some online gaming with Halo: Reach and the Gears of War 3 Beta (Read the preview by our very own Abdo) as Microsoft has given all users a free XBL weekend to enjoy during the break. Moreover, if you have a PS3 Portal 2 copy, then make sure to redeem your free PC and MAC version from the inclosed code that comes with the game. Do note that it is a hefty 11 GB download.

Should there be Compensation?
Well, this is a tough one to crack. At one side, the PSN is a free service and you cannot ask for compensation when something that is free is taken offline for a couple of days. However, PS+ users (A yearly 50$ service that Sony launched last year that gives subscribers exclusive access to demos, betas, and free content) might be have a right to ask for some free extra goodies having paid an investment in the service. Do keep in mind that this is slightly different than what happened to X-Box Live in christmas of 2007.
Back in 2007, XBL suffered a minor hiccup for 24 hours during christmas day. After which, Microsoft offered a game for free for a whole week. The difference between what is happening now and back then is that to be able to play on the XBL service you have to pay a 60$ subscription fee, meanwhile on the PSN it is completely free.
However, knowing Sony, I am definitely positive that they will be offering all their users a nice and hefty consolation prize via a free first party PSN game or maybe a week long sales on many PlayStation Store blockbusters.

When will it all be Over?
Hopefully soon. Sony has been ensuring us that they are working their butts off to get everything up and running soon enough. Do keep in mind that it is highly harmful for Sony to keep the service out for so long as it would not only hurt their consumers’ loyalty, but the stockholders’ and investors’ faith in the company as a whole. And everyday spent offline, Sony might be losing thousands of game sales and online purchases especially in such a time period. Rumors have been indicating that servers will be up and running as of tomorrow in Japan and the day after that in Europe and the United States.
All will be well soon. Hopefully. Right? I hope so.

Cross you Fingers and Hope for the Best
All we can do is just cross our fingers and hope for the best. Sony know what they are doing best, we just to need to be faithful and patient. How to Still play online on PS3 :

You must login or register to view this content.

Many people are frustrated go offline from PSN and it looks like the PSN today will not come back online. But people who really love games to play with other people we now have a solution.

We caution you all that this solution is not exactly one that is done within two minutes. But one solution is to use X-link. Using the program X-link your local co-op games and play online multiplayer games. So a game that normally has a split screen, you can still play online like some Call of Duty games. It is of course not the same as an online game, but some people would have a small, temporary solution.

Explain the whole process, we do not, because we have not tried it yet.You must login or register to view this content.

UPDATE:

**UPDATE** Our Sony rep just dropped us a quick note with some responses to the questions, while still vague at least they are working on fixes and listening to the feedback of their customers. One thing of interest is that it seems they are still investigating if personal data was breeched and in what capacity. Responses from SCEA PR are in red.
For a 4th day gamers are waking up to no access to their online PS3 gaming, as Sony continues to keep the Playstation Network offline due to “external intrusions”. Since the 20th when PSN went down around the world Sony has been very vague and only given out the same update “The system is down, we are working on it”. But after 4 days gamers are beginning to get restless and there are many questions that myself as well as others feel need to be answered by Sony sooner then later.

1) When will service return?
We were told 1 to 2 days but that was 3 days ago. It’s understandable that the downtime and fix might take time but gamers would like a window of time.

SCEA: We will announce through our websites as soon as there are any updates. We are currently investigating to determine the cause of this outage and are working to restore and maintain the services. Since this is an overall security related issue, we will not be providing further commentary for this case.

2) Will Playstation Plus subscribers be reimbursed for downtime?
Sony rolled out this great subscription service which while doesn’t give extra online play, but does offer access to games that require downloads. For 4 days us Playstation Plus subscribers have not been able to download or access full game trials and other content that we have paid for.

SCEA: We will let our subscribers know as soon as there are updates.

3) Is our personal information safe?
The first thing Sony should have investigated and informed us about is, if the hackers were able to access user personal information including credit card numbers. At this point we should know from Sony if our personal information is safe, and if it isn’t, then it’s only right that we know so we can take our own protective measures.

SCEA: We are currently investigating the matter, and will notify as soon as there are any updates.

These are just 3 of the many questions that have been swirling around the internet, and in my book 3 of the most important. We ask Sony to answer these questions and give the gaming community the vital information that they need to insure the safety of
