This September, Sony will launch a new program called ‘PSN Pass’–available only, “in countries that have PlayStation Store”. Games that come with PSN Pass will include a registration code that is good for one-time use to enable online play. The first game to make use of PSN Pass program appears to be Resistance 3 (see image above, from Konsolentreff). Obviously, you will have to purchase a new PSN Pass registration code for used games that carries the PSN Pass emblem. Gaming site IGN contacted SCEA for clarification and this is the response:

We are always evaluating new programs for our online offering, and starting with Resistance 3 this September, we will be instituting a network pass program for PS3 games with online capabilities.
This program will be game-specific. Games that are a part of this program will include a single-use registration code that grants the account holder redeeming the code full online access for that title.

This is an important initiative as it allows us to accelerate our commitment to enhancing premium online services across our first party game portfolio.

Actually, they can insist because the games are being developed and sold for their system. If they don't want something there, it doesn't have to be. They could easily just make an ultimatum w/ all the publishers; give up the online passes for the XBOX, or quit developing for our platform. It's a risky thing to do on Microsoft's part, however if they succeeded w/ that ultimatum they'd gain a huge share of PS3 gamers. Also, I doubt many publishers would oppose such a move by Microsoft, just because the profit they make from the XBOX platform alone is astonishing, and it's required to keep them making a profit.

Okay yes, strictly speaking they can insist on it however I don't believe they ever would. Sony can at least use CFW and the recent hack to make excuses for why games should have these, rather than just admitting "**** preowned owners" but if anyone one developer gave an ultimate like no passes, they'd risk losing huge amount of business.

Like they don't milk enough money out of us anyway? It's 60 bucks for a game and they want us to pay more. I'm seriously considering selling my OFW PS3, and getting a 3.55 CFW. Then going underground and becoming a pirate.

I do not know why everybody is going mad.

First of all you will not pay anything except if you buy an used game, this is for preventing game shares.

Stop acting stupid, you know you had it coming.

Can you even read? You will buy a game, which is 60 bucks. It will include a code that you can use for Online Play.
The extra costs are only for used games.
The new games will just be the same price, you will not need to pay extra cash to play online!

On EA games if you buy used you had to buy online code to play online so its not really new but Sony needs the money cause the just lost so much.

ya but you got to think how that our problem if they dont make any money on used games when the used games where brought new in the first place buying stuff used is good because not everyone got 40 to 50 pounds to spend on a game these days so to me they should just leave it how it is

someone had to buy it new so really they dont lose money because someone bought it new

RIP PICHU.
Ahh, hell no. I bought my Ps3 for free online play. If this goes through, I might as well just sell my system and my games and switch over to XBox and pay for the better service than what Ps3 will offer.

Yeah and don't assume things, I usually buy used games anyway. $60 is to expensive to spend on a video game, I have more important things to spend money on. So I don't want to have to spend money to play online, that is ridiculous. Stop defending this stupid Idea. And how does this prevent game sharing? How the hell do you game share a disc? Think before you post. It really does help.
