Dean who is known for his work on the popular PS3 backup manager, multiMAN has confirmed that the Direct Boot function that is already incorporated in his manager doesn’t have to use the syscalls but instead directly executes the EBOOT.BIN so that it will work without path redirection.
What does it means to the end users? For starters, when Geohot releases his tools that are needed to sign the homebrew, the multiMAN can also be signed and then the Direct Boot function can be used which means you can play backup games on Geohot’s CFW. However, not all games support Direct Boot function. Like Dean says, it’s 3 out of 10.
I posted about that couple of days ago. multiMAN’s direct boot doesn’t use syscalls, but executes the EBOOT.BIN directly, so it will work without path redirection. Of course it will work just for couple of games (I have 10 and 3 of them work).
You need a way to make the PS3 system to execute an EBOOT.BIN, not the game itself.
This means that when geohot, or anyone else releases a program to sign homebrew, that backup managers will be possible and you can run backups off the hard drive, which was thought not to be possible... This does not mean it is for piracy, back up manager is to run backups of your own games off of your hard drive legally, it is the person who uses it for piracy is the only one who can be blamed legally, so geohot or any other person doesn't need to worry about it breaking laws as long as they don't...
