Im going to show you how to make your e3 flasher usb powered (or power by plugin).
Why would you want to do this? We don't always have the opportunity to keep a
ps3 running, and that is usually needed in order to extract a cid from your
most dead of ps3s. This will not harm your e3 flasher if the instructions are
followed, but the risk is yours to take.

You're going to need:
e3 flasher
wire
Soldering iron
a usb cable (one that you are willing to cut up) |Alternatively you can use a wall plugin. Most phone chargers etc can supply the 4-5v we need|
tape

1. Let's start with the e3 flasher
On the bottom of the flasher it should look like this

You must login or register to view this content.

2. cut two 4-5inch pieces of small wire (one black and one red?)

3. You want to solder one wire to positive and one to negative

You must login or register to view this content.

should look like so:

You must login or register to view this content.

4. Tape over it to prevent shorting

You must login or register to view this content.

You must login or register to view this content.

5. Cut one end of the usb cable off and expose the two wires
*If there are more than two wires, tape them all to the side, leave red and black, or whatever + and - is for you
Hopefully(in most cases, it will be easy to destinguish which of the two wires is + or -, but if not
you will have to test with a multimeter.*

6. connect red+ to red+ and blk- to blk- from the new wires on the e3 flasher, to your usb cable

You must login or register to view this content.

7. Plug the usb into your PC (most if not all will supply 5v, the max amount to power your e3 flasher)
Less than 3v will not power it enough to get a backup
Do not use over 5v it is the max

You must login or register to view this content.

Part 2
Extracting a NOR chip to get a backup(retrieve a CID) from a completely dead Ps3

What you will need:
externally powered e3 flasher
heat gun
Access to NOR chip

1. Strip the ps3 to the motherboard

2. Locate your NOR chip

3. use your heat gun to blast directly at the NOR chip until you can EASILY slide the chip away

So now you got one or some of these Smile

You must login or register to view this content.

4. Once you have the chip, it is just a matter of squeezing the chip into your usb powered e3 flasher's clip
and going about it as you normally would get a backup
* e3 flasher's lights should shine very bright. If the e3 flasher's lights are dim, you have the chip in backwards.

Hope it helps !

Nice tutorial, I know the method of powering it via a PSU. Also just a note you don't have to take the Nor off the motherboard you could simple make heavy scoring marks around the Nor resulting in no power being sent to the motherboard... just use a screw driver or a sharp object to make this. Then all you do is place the Nor Clip on the the Nor Chip, this method is best if you don't wish to buy a heat gun. See the picture I made below:

I've been trying this for a good few hours. And can't get the file I need for the CID just give me a error everytime.
I got a grinder out of the garage and cut round the chip but still can't get the file

All switches down except 3rd from the left? A lot of the times you can just squeeze it together with your fingers, or if not just push it down onto a table. It takes very little pressure..I haven't need to shave my chip but i did also on one of my clips..

It is a delicate process so hopefully you have not broken any legs on the NOR chip. Check the legs to make sure none of them are touching each other.

This is what I like to do, I'll usually just snap the NOR chip into the e3 flasher clip like so

and then push down hard and tape it to the table. I don't even have to touch it

Nice tut but this has been around for a while & you should give credit to the original person who came up with this method,

Bobby Downgrades done this ages ago, see vid & date of it.

I have done this loads of times & got many cid's using a pc psu that has 3.3 volts

USB power i quite high at 5 volts so there is a risk of damaging your e3 flasher

After taking off a few nor chips i found it way easier just to cut round the chip if you don't care about damaging the mobo,

Its very easy to damage/bend the pins on the nor chip when taking it of the mobo & if you get solder bridges then you need a solder wick to remove them

I use a small pin & magnifying glass to straighten any bent pins

Just a few of the chips I've dome this with & successfully got cid's from.

You must login or register to view this content.

Like i said good tut but you should give credit to the person who did this first,

Bobby Downgrades.
