Im currently stuck on a step for downgrading, i gota buy a dongle in order to finish the downgrade apparently, but here is your answer.

The E3 Flasher is a device that "CAN" BRICK your ps3 if you dont do it properly. Some Bricks are fixable n some are not.

With the E3 Flasher, it allows you to downgrade to a earlier firmware that allows your to jailbreak.

If you want play online with patches you can do either data transfer to another ps3, or upgrade your ps3 again to play online, then downgrade again to change patches.
