Well, funny thing with mine yesterday, after completing single player, went to try it online.
A message came up to redeem or purchase an online code.
I just clicked close on that message and it took me to multiplayer menu where I played for a couple of hours with no problem.

I don't know if it's like a trial period or something, but I didn't need a code to play online.

The battle code is already out on UK psn store. The code allows you to rank up past level 5 so if you don't have it the max rank u can get is 5
