I wouldn't say it's dead but it's just getting less active from time to time.

it's full of skids now you can't play any games without little scrubs hitting you offline

With these sort of systems you find even a few decades later it's not uncommon that there will be a few people that would be looking to get modded units and Mess around with them, sure won't be a large community but the little communities are usually dedicated and happy to share any new findings on the rare occasion some gets bored and wants to try a reverse engineering project or whatever. But that's just a opinion going off how some of the retro communities are now, though good chance that people will just let it dye out but it's not uncommon for some collectors to mod units once dvd drives fail etc and parts became harder to find though atm parts are easy to get imported from China still new and second hand locally, though the community online on these systems is pretty dead without a doubt, with lack of content releases and how unplayable some old gen games have becomes, though as someone who plays for trophies none of this matters to me.
