Getting Started
Types of firmwares

OFW = Original Firmware from Sony
DEX = Original Firmware from Sony (Developer) only testing / debug PS4 consoles
CFW = Custom Firmware, professionally modified open PS4 firmware
(There is not any custom firmware / exploits for PS4 yet)



PlayStation 4 Operating System

Name: ORBIS OS
Based on: FreeBSD 9.0
Platform: 64 bits (x86_64)




Where to put PS4UPDATE.PUP file on usb drive

(Make the directory in folders on usb as stated here)

(USB Directory) > PS4 > UPDATE > PS4UPDATE.PUP file



How to get into safe mode and install PS4 update

1. Connect the USB storage device that the update file is saved on, into your PS4.

2. Turn off the PlayStation 4 by pressing the power button. The power will blink for a few seconds before turning off.

3. Once the PlayStation 4 is off, press and hold the power button. Release it after you've heard two beeps: one when you first press, and another 7 seconds later.

4. Connect the DualShock 4 controller with the USB cable and press the PS button on the controller.

5. Select [Update System Software] Then follow the screen to complete the installation.

Safe Mode Options

Restart System - Ends Safe Mode and restarts the PlayStation 4 normally.

Change Resolution - Changes the screen resolution to 480p when the PlayStation 4 is restarted.

Update System Software - Allows the PlayStation 4 to update the system software via Internet, USB Drive, or Disc.

Restore Default Settings - Restores the PlayStation 4 to the default factory settings.

Rebuild Database - Scans the drive and creates a new database of all content.
This operation may take a long time depending on the type and number of data items.

Initialize PS4 - Important: All data and settings will be lost by performing this step.
Deletes all user data and restores the PS4 as if it just came out of the box. This option is the same as [Initialize PS4] in the (Settings) menu. System software (firmware) is not deleted.
Initialize PS4 (Re-install System Software) - IMPORTANT: Deletes all information on the HDD, including the System Software. A message that states a USB storage device containing the System Software must be connected, is displayed. Then you can confirm the selection.

Can someone ELI5 please because this sounds to me like you could do a soft downgrade on the console? Of course that would be provided that you have the target firmware on hand..?

Surely it can't be that simple?

I'm leaving the original post on here so anyone else not well educated on this comes along so they can see it.

To answer my own question from earlier, in short, no. Yes, it does remove the firmware but does not impact the flash to the nor chip of the console. Basically this means that you have to reinstall the firmware of the same or higher level. Not a clean sweep or else if you even could you would have to restructure the way the console receives the updates. Which would apparently be next to impossible and not worth the trouble.

If this a downgrade opportunity, then no. It is not proven this is correct, and if it is, it has been patched. Someone sounds like they were trolling, and it's stupid to rebuild your PS4's database for a downgrade. This was proven unsuccessful on PS3, why the hell would it prove to be beneficial on PS4?
