Basically certain servers cant host a 40 gigabyte file so you download it in parts and when you extract it-it all comes together as one pkg.

So kinda like r00, r01, r02, etc.?

Well you download all the parts whether they be named .pkg, .r00, .z01 (doesn't matter if you're just downloading them) but when you extract them all together it will merge into one pkg file.
