Yesterday — after a bit of waiting — Bethesda finally enabled mods on the Xbox One version of Fallout 4, giving console players access to an expansive and bizarre world that PC players have had for years. That means new weapons, that means cheats, that means premade settlements and all manner of new strangeness. Right now, only Xbox One and PC players have access to mods, however. PS4 players should be able to follow suit within the month, if everything goes to plan. “We anticipate Mods arriving on the PS4 next month,” Bethesda said in a blog post yesterday (next month referring to the one that started today).

“Mods and the players who create them have always been an important part of our games, going all the way back to Morrowind and The Elder Scrolls Construction Set. We believe that our games become something much more special, when we put the power of creation in your hands. New quests, environments, characters, dialogue, outfits, weapons and more – with Mods, the possibilities of what you can do are endless. You are creating new experiences that enhance and take our games into amazing and surprising new directions,” the company continues.

My guess is that mods will go live during the company’s E3 press conference — Bethesda is keen on making its press conference one of the biggest events at the big show in LA, and last year it made waves by the surprise release of Fallout Shelter. Mods on PS4 would be a pretty straightforward way to achieve the same effect.

It’s all something of an experiment, albeit one that PC players have been tinkering with for decades. Will console players take to player-created content as well as their Windows kin, or will things get too confusing when games refuse to load or unstoppable bugs hinder their progress? Consoles and PC are more similar than they’ve ever been, but people still have pretty different expectations as to what they’re going to be getting from each experience. I;m also curious to see what the status of paid mods becomes with this shift: you can bet that Bethesda is still interested in the concept, and consoles might be a better place to test the thing idea out than on PC. :fout:
