This has been racking my brain out on how to do it. I have helped myself looking around the forums, looking at tutorials, searching Google and downloading various files to downgrade my PS3. I feel like I'm going around in circles making no progress whatsoever.

The files I've downloaded are: Rebug Toolbox (that hasn't seem to have done much), 999.pup (the file in order to downgrade but I get an error).

I just don't know what to do. Could you help me out? or at least point me in the direction of something that is simple and easy to understand?

I'm currently on 4.55.

You will need a E3 flasher but firstly before anything you need the correct CECH number.

Mine is: CECH-2003A

Don't buy an e3 flasher unless you know what you're doing.
You should get someone to downgrade your system, Look on craigslist if anybody does downgrading services around your area. If not, your last bet is eBay

A lot of us were not familiar with the E3 Flasher!
I personally would never send off my PS3 to get downgraded.
There are many things that can happen comparing with doing it yourself:
1) they can steal your CID
2) they can steal/swap hardware
3) they can steal the PS3
4) PS3 can be damaged while shipping
5) Ps3 can be damaged by the other person
6) can be lost while in transit

Versus if you do it yourself:
1) you possibly brick it
2) damage hardware

Don't be ever discourage! There are many videos on how to use the E3 Flasher bro. You really just need to learn how to open/close the PS3 and last of course, learn how to use the E3 Flasher. And last piece of advise, VALIDATE your dumps!!!

Follow a video and copy everything step by step very easy bro you can't go wrong unless you decide to rush and skip stuff. Like Libary said don't send it off to get downgraded there most likely going to jack your console ID then you will get your console back all excited and shit then before you know it your console has been banned.
