Have you ever wanted to watch Netflix, Hulu, MTV or any other region-locked streams because either your area doesn’t offer anything, or if what it does offer is not good enough? Well, I have, but no worries, it is easy and free to do. All you need is a VPN. In this tutorial, I'm going to show you, which to use, and how to get them running.
What is a VPN?
I'm no 'Internet guru', so I'm going to make it as painless and easy to understand as possible. VPN stand’s for "Virtual private network", and what it simply does is hiding you and your computers identity behind a private network. That way, when you enter any website, the VPN will make it so that it looks like the client(VPN) is visiting the website, instead of you.
How does this allow you to unblock locked content?
Lets take the US Netflix for example; I'm stationed in Europe, and therefore when I try to access the site, it will tell me its locked for use only in the US. The way they do this is by checking your IP, which will reveal where in the world you are stationed. Now, if you browse Netflix through the VPN, it will see the VPN's IP which is placed in the US instead of yours which may be placed in Europe, Asia etc...,and therefore, still allow access.
Is it legal?
Yes, its totally legal for anyone to do.
Tutorial.
- Step 1. What you first need to do is find what VPN you wanna use. This may vary, as VPN's has become more and more common, and some sites, therefore, block out well known VPN-IP's. Do not worry, it should not be to hard, seeing you are assigned a different IP every time you load it. Personally I have 2 VPN clients, as some work better than others on certain sites.
HotSpot Shield.
This VPN is one of the most famous free VPN's out there. Sadly its so well known, that they have been able to block most of the IP’s from sites like Netflix and Hulu. It works like a charm on smaller sites, so if you wanna see a region-locked YouTube video, is this one to use. **
Spoiler:
HotSpot Shield. Note that with this VPN, comes advertisments. But anyway, this is what it looks like.
UltraSurf.
I find this one the best working for me. It has never failed to give me access to sites like Hulu, Netflix or MTV. It is fast, free and reliable so I see no reason why not to have it on your computer. **
Spoiler:
This is what it looks like when UltraSurf is up and running.
- Step 2.
Both programs are simple .exe files, and all you have to do is download and follow on-screen instructions. When you have a VPN installed, run it and it should automatically assign you an IP address.
- Step 3.
When the status say "Connected" you can open any web-browser, and you are now able to access blocked content. Do not use two clients at the same time, as this will make it either go dead slow or not connect at all. One is more than enough.
*note* When you are finished using the VPN, I recommend closing it as these free ones are not as fast as your regular WiFi. *Note*
Well, that is about it for now. I hope this little tutorial helped you in any way, and if you have any questions, feel free to either quote me here or ask me in a PM.
