Ok, I know this works because I have done it twice. I just got off the phone with Xbox customer support and I'll tell you what I did.
Ok, so the first thing is that when I got my gold I activated the 3 month card on the 6th or 7th of this month (today is the 23rd). When I called Xbox, I simply told them I wanted to cancel my Xbox membership. (Xbox customer support can't give you days of gold so they have to give you your gold back in months instead of days) The agent will usually ask you why and what I told them was I am going to be offline for a while and whant to save it for later when I get back online. The agent what she did was refund the entire 3 month gold membership to me and sent me an email with the redeem code.
I know you don't get a lot of gold over it, but you do get to get a few extra weeks and doing that several times can easily add up to a month or two of free gold. Just take note that you have to give them all of your info so they can know that your the account holder.
