I have only found firms that want to make more money from the programmers than the specialists themselves made. Surely there are talented individuals out there somewhere! Can anyone point me to the forums or blogs where these types of engineers hang out?

1) Most of these guys are going to look for some sort of payment
2) They will not work for free
3) They must purchase a legal copy of the software or hardware in which you are wanting them to work with. By not purchasing and owning, they are legally not allowed to modify, deconstruct or reverse any of the software. Even if you own it, that binding agreement for owning the software only applies to you.

This means if you are wanting to meddle with a 100 dollar piece of software, the two of you must purchase a legal copy to work with. This also applies to hardware.
