Last we checked, You must login or register to view this content., at $37 a pop. Checking in this week, we find the company is still losing money on every PS3 sold. But now, it's only $18.

Yes, having reduced the functionality and the size of the console, and benefited from natural declines in the cost of component parts since the PS3 launched in 2006, Sony has got the PS3 down to the point where by 2011 the company estimates it'll finally be making money on every console that goes out the door.

Which when you consider it launched at $599 - and Sony's financial troubles of late - is an excellent result for the company.

This looks bad but actually it's pretty damm impressive, as the article states at the end. $600 down to less than half that now, it's not easy to reduce losses like that. But still, a loss is a loss.

sony makes way to much money on their music holdings, their endless line of electronics...this branch may be at a loss, but sony is cost effective and will come out in the long run, what company can say they take a intentional loss to benefit the people buying the stuff?? defo not xbox or Wii

The price of making a Slim was looked into by iSuppli, a market research firm, finding it costs $336.27 to craft a 120GB Slim, which retails for $299 in the US. That's a loss of roughly $37 (around £23) per console. Sony is confident this will turn around in time, however.

Regenerated and Reborn
When the original 60gb model was out, it had 4 usbs right?
It had card readers, and if you look at where you put the disc in, it had rubber and not the fluffy stuff which they use now
It had a 3 stage fan
It had backwards compatibility
Slowly, they reduced the quality of the console with every model they released
Now it has reached a point that the slim is so much of a crappier model that you can't even install linux on it, which for me, was a selling point of the ps3
Whats next sony?

That's wierd that they have to take a loss for every system sold. You'd think they would just up the price a bit, but I'm glad they didn't since I just bought a slim Smile
