When I tried to stop/eject the external hard drive, I get this message

What do I have to do to fix this?

try using another cable

try format thru ms-dos if u can

When I try to format in MS-DOS, it says the driver does not exist. I might be doing it wrong though.

turn on your computer in safe mode, then plug it in, use it, un-plug it..then resart your computer normally, the usb should work

It may have been corrupted while using it. Thats just a quick guess from me
