Depends on the motor in question - Black under Chrome works for me on cars like the Dukes/Charger with an evil skull logo, for a panel van Youga conversion, green with pink or red aka 'Mystery Machine' style (now that shows my age i guess), and for the Super Diamond/Rolls, pink under chrome and a plate that reads 'FAB 1'. For a Shafter/Merc - gold under bronze or similar makes a good metallic recreation of one the better r/w merc metallic finishes i happen to like (and had on a road spec Merc 190 once).

I like the black steel or metal options they look especially good on trucks :p

Have to agree on those options, wisemonkey suggests, for trucks (and Guardian given it's essentially a truck-based pickup). After all, the only time you really go with decorator/show style colour scheme on those is for show vehicles and workers that also do the show circuit (in the R/W for comparision).

Simple and clean definitely wins when it comes to trucks - and let's not forget, regardless of vehicle, you don't really want something that's 'thousand foot neon arrow' stand-out noticeable for when you are trying to be low profile, and anyone with a brain engaged, keeps at least one 'sleeper' in their collection for 'work' and 'sting' tactics in street racing.

I'll have to give that one a try, Passion, I do know there's a few similar variations of bronze through steel variations on Pure Gold which change it to a deeper colour or a more lighter 'Cornish' gold colour - i just never seem to remember the combos. Possibly adding Yellow Neons would work with those and yours, but then again, maybe not - too much 'gilding the lily' maybe?

Whilst it's a somewhat 'bling to death' combo - Chrome over Gold or the Reverse combo can be interesting for it's literal 'two extremes' depending on strong light or street light.

Mind you, and we're talking of modded paint jobs here to some extent, tweaking your headlight intensity (or neons if you know how) to 10-50x brighter creates some interesting back reflection effects on your Chrome/Pure Gold/Pure Alloy type finishes, and has the side benefit of screwing with the perception of others when you do the sneaky 'roll up, hit the lights full beam' stunt
