Recent words from Valve have announced that Valve’s version of the Steam Machine will not be released until sometime next year. Specifically, Eric Hope the product designer of Valve told us:

We're now using wireless prototype controllers to conduct live playtests, with everyone from industry professionals to die-hard gamers to casual gamers. It's generating a ton of useful feedback, and it means we'll be able to make the controller a lot better. Of course, it's also keeping us pretty busy making all those improvements.

So why a delay on the controller? TechRadar’s review tells readers “A solid, inventive controller, but not what you want for competitive gaming.”

Now, the controller isn’t all bad for gamers, but it seems to only reach out to casual gamers. As Alex Roth from TechRadar states “the controller is made to be more comfortable on your couch and not serious, milliseconds matter kind of game.”
You can hear his full review of the controller in the video below:

So the controller has really put Valve’s Steam Machine on hold, but what about other companies? Alienware has not kept their mouths shut and are extremely proud to be working on their own version of the Steam Machine and told people back in January that its Steam Machine will have a similar price to the XBone and Ps4, which is contrary to a lot of preorder packages that displayed the console anywhere from $600 to $1,000. That being said, Alienware told the world that they are planning on a September launch. Some of the other companies that were included on Steam’s first generation console included Alternate, CyberPowerPC, Digital Storm, Falcon NW, GigaByte, iBuyPower, Maingear, Materiel.net, Next Spa, Origin PC, Scan, Webhallen, and Zotac; all of these companies have been confirmed via Valve. So just like L4D 3 and HL3, Valve’s Steam Machine is in development and has been delayed to a more realistic release window of 2015.

What are some of your thoughts about Valve’s Steam Machine? Or is the Steam Machine just a glorified pre-built PC? In my opinion, we’ll be hearing more information regarding this and other Valve software at E3 in the upcoming days.
