and what is the purpose for using DEX firmwires? I've been under a rock for a while when it comes to ps3 hacks and exploiting for a while thanks to sony updating its keys and shit.

You have a CEX (retail)
DEX is a debug system, SEX is a shop/kiosk, and DECR is a true Dev Debug system.

BTW, it is possible to convert your CEX console to a DEX.
