Step 1 -
Connect your PS3 to FTP using blackb0x and Filezilla.

Step 2 -
On Filezilla once connected to PS3 FTP navigate to-
/dev_hdd0/home/00000023/friendim/avatar

where my user is "00000023" yours will be different

Step 3 -
Find a friend which you love or hate, copy there avatar to the desktop e.g tom45.png drag to desktop

Step 4 -
Edit the picture but dont change the resolution, then save it or press
Ctrl+S.

Step 5 -
Put the picture file you edited back in your
/dev_hdd0/home/00000023/friendim/avatar area and then disconnect from ftp and filezilla then press PS button, look at the friends avatar you edited

Not copied found it whilst searching files
