Ever since MAG launched back in 2010, it showed that the PS3 had room for a competitive FPS with MMO elements. Dust 514 takes that glimmer of hope and expands upon it by directly linking in with EVE Online; arguably the most hardcore and in depth MMO out there. What you get is potentially the most open ended shooter on PS3 yet, and here’s ten reasons why Dust 514 could well be the best online FPS experience the PS3 will have to offer when it launches later this year

Master and Commander

Much like in MAG, some players will be able to elect themselves as unit commander, thus granting them an RTS like view where they can order other players and place various structures around the map. They also need to manage resources as well though, so great power will indeed come with great responsibility.

Evolving Lanscapes

As Dust 514 is set in the ever-changing world of EVE Online, it means that the maps you fight on are constantly evolving. Though the topography of each planet remains stable the structures and subsequent cover available will change based on how commanders choose to place their buildings and structures, making every battle a fresh experience.

Unbound Territories

As the fighting in Dust occurs on EVE Online planets, there aren’t set maps as such. Whilst this may alarm more conservative FPS players, it does mean that the scope for map variety is almost limitless. Without set maps, the action could be happening any time and anywhere, resulting in a truly spontaneous style of combat.

Skill Variety

Much like its MMO older brother, Dust 514 seems set to have a huge amount of skills and upgrades available. Developer CCP has already claimed it will take a single player seven years to max out every skill in the game, thus forcing players to specialize into roles that they are comfortable with. This could be disheartening if skill development is too slow a process, but the scope for team mechanics is exciting indeed.

A Persistant Battlefield

As Dust 514 is constantly connected to EVE Online, it means that the battles you fight occur within and affect a persistent world. Every win or loss will change the control and balance of power of a particular planet, meaning your performance will have real world effects in EVE Online. No pressure then eh?

Mercenaries for hire

In comparison to the big corporations in EVE, Dust players will merely be the mercenaries that the larger groups can hire to take control of planets and their resources. That doesn’t mean the mercenaries are insignificant though, as this kind of player interaction will certainly lead to interesting situations and personal politics within the ever-expanding EVE Online community for both EVE and Dust players alike.

Direct Intervention

So those big guys in EVE who are hiring you? Well don’t think they’ll just abandon you while you’re on the job. Hell, if they’re really serious about you succeeding, then they can directly aid you with orbital strikes. If you spot a target on the planet you’re fighting on, should a nearby ship see it, they can choose to shoot at the planet’s surface; a strike that would surely tip the tides of battle one way or another.

Future Expansions

Despite being some time off release, CCP already apparently have ideas for future updates cooking up for Dust 514. They’ve already discussed introducing environmental hazards like lava planets, and there have already been hints of deployable exoskeletons that players can use in battle to give them the edge. Sounds fun, if a bit generic.

A Different business for model

Rather than opting for the often maligned subscription model of EVE Online and other such MMORPGs, Dust 514 is instead heading down the micro-transaction route. Though players can fast track by purchasing Aurum with real money, EVE’s in-game ISK currency can still be earned to unlock new abilities in Dust.

Testing, testing 123

Though it’s becoming more and more common practice with each passing year, it’s comforting to know when an MMO has gone through a rigorous beta testing period. Having had a closed and open beta recently, it seems likely that Dust 514 will be able to launch as a balanced and reasonably glitch free product.

They have a skirmish mode which is basically conquest from BF3 or domination from CoD.
