There is already a notification on/off option without the update but it turns on/off ALL notifications, like messages, online presence, trophies etc.

This update either gives a specific on/off to trophies, or I'm missing something.

I can take a good guess to why Sony would release a separate update just for trophies when you can turn all notifications off already. To stop or slow down current CFW modders. And maybe add in a small code to check if the trophy is legit, to stop trophy hacking. I don't know.
