The only reason it would disappear would be if you quit the game before picking it up again (maybe dying too). Any item you drop is safe to pick up again until you save and quit.

No, no matter what I was doing item was dissapearing in the chapel. Once I changed area to Firelink Shrine, it would drop normally. Previously, any special items would just not appear as gold bag, only normal weapons would.
As for the snake, it didn't show up on Maiden save for me and had to use Knight's save for it to show. Going to the Abyss with Maiden was just pure darkness.
Regardless, it worked both ways, just not as described for me. I'm on the latest version if that matters

All saves can be resigned with Save Wizard which you can purchase on savewizard.net
