Look out Relic, you've got some competition, and it's coming from a very unexpected source. Square Enix, which is best known for its Japanese RPGs, is publishing a World War II RTS.
Titled Order of War, it will be set on the scene of two massive Allied operations that took place in 1944. Development will be handled by by Belarus-based Wargaming.net, which is best known for its Massive Assault series, and promises to place players in command of an "entire armed force consisting of up to 1000 soldiers, tanks, armored vehicles and airplanes." There will also be the usual array of multiplayer options such as deathmatch and skirmish modes.

"Order of War offers Square Enix an exciting opportunity to enter this hugely popular genre, and is a strong proposition for our first western-developed release," said Square Enix North American branch president and CEO John Yamamoto.

Order of War is part of Square Enix's stated goal of increasing western development. Other moves include the purchase of British publisher Eidos Interactive, the use of the Unreal Engine 3 in Last Remnant, and an increased focus on the Xbox 360.

At the moment, Order of War is slated to arrive in Fall 2009 for the the PC. We'll keep you up to date as more information arrives.
