Over the past few days updates have been coming out about the situation with PlayStation Network. PlayStation owners have certainly been losing patience with the outage that is effecting millions. And while the daily updates from Sony on their PlayStation blog have been welcomed, they certainly don’t help the building frustration.

Today we were given another update by: Patrick Seybold // Sr. Director, Corporate Communications & Social Media.

Here is the recent update given by him below.

Thank you for your patience while we work to resolve the current outage of PlayStation Network & Qriocity services. We are currently working to send a similar message to the one below via email to all of our registered account holders regarding a compromise of personal information as a result of an illegal intrusion on our systems. These malicious actions have also had an impact on your ability to enjoy the services provided by PlayStation Network and Qriocity including online gaming and online access to music, movies, sports and TV shows. We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week.

We’re working day and night to ensure it is done as quickly as possible. We appreciate your patience and feedback.

Valued PlayStation Network/Qriocity Customer:
We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011, certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account information was compromised in connection with an illegal and unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this intrusion, we have:

Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;
Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full and complete investigation into what happened; and
Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our network infrastructure by re-building our system to provide you with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident, we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country, email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login, and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data, including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip), and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity, out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email, telephone, and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information, you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them, as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information for those who wish to consider it:

U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report, visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S. credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a “fraud alert” on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report, please contact any one of the agencies listed below.

It all started on April 20th or so but many users were having problems for a couple weeks before It got noticed enough for them to make a post about it. All this is saying is that they are aware of certain functions of PlayStation Network being down and they would report back to use as they get more information.

Providing quality entertainment services to our customers and partners is our utmost priority. We are doing all we can to resolve this situation quickly, and we once again thank you for your patience. We will continue to update you promptly as we have additional information to share.

In this new update that they provided to us a day later they finally state that an external intrusion on the system has affected the PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. (Which basically puts it into view that something that should not be their had gotten into where it should not have gone.) Then they went on to say that they turned off PlayStation Network two days before this to allow them to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services. (While providing quality entertainment services to the customers and resolve the issues quickly). And then say they will provide us when more information soon.

Our efforts to resolve this matter involve re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure. Though this task is time-consuming, we decided it was worth the time necessary to provide the system with additional security.

We thank you for your patience to date and ask for a little more while we move towards completion of this project. We will continue to give you updates as they become available.

The next day they posted another update saying the PlayStation Network services have been suspended. They go on to say that they are working around the clock to bring the services back up and working properly. But the efforts by doing require the re-building of the system from further strength for security and network infrastructure. They went to go on to say that the time spent doing this will be and is time-consuming and they decided to do this because they stated it was worth the time they are putting into this to make the security better.

4-24-11: No Updates today. Seems like they left us hanging in the blue on this day.

As we previously noted, this is a time intensive process and we’re working to get them back online quickly. We’ll keep you updated with information as it becomes available. We once again thank you for your patience.

Seems like on this update they just wanted to get a update out so people know that they are still working in the issue and is very time consuming while in the process. And says once again they are trying to get back online as quickly as they can.

I wanted to take this opportunity to clarify a point and answer one of the most frequently asked questions today.

There’s a difference in timing between when we identified there was an intrusion and when we learned of consumers’ data being compromised. We learned there was an intrusion April 19th and subsequently shut the services down. We then brought in outside experts to help us learn how the intrusion occurred and to conduct an investigation to determine the nature and scope of the incident. It was necessary to conduct several days of forensic analysis, and it took our experts until yesterday to understand the scope of the breach. We then shared that information with our consumers and announced it publicly this afternoon.

Judgement Day

I would like to call today a Judgement day by Sony. They really made a big update on this one for sure. So let's get into it shall we. Today's update can be found above where the first quote starts and click the spoiler to be able to see and read the information given.

So first let's get to the good news at least I will have to say. The Update goes off and says "We have a clear path to have PlayStation Network and Qriocity systems back online, and expect to restore some services within a week." Well I know they have been saying this in all updates but at least they have come out and said they it will take another week but it is still frustrating to many. They once again say they are working day and night on fixing this issue and is trying to fix this as soon as possible.

Now here comes the real big bomb. They go onto say and I quote

Now it's getting very serious. This means whoever had hacked/gotten into the PlayStation Network servers have gotten your city, state and even zip codes. Not just that but you emails, you passwords, your logs and payments, billing address/home address/name/country and basically anything they wanted to take from your profile. This is nothing to mess with and this is some serious stuff right here.

This is a very big breach and I'm sure this will go down in history as one of the largest breaches in history. And I'm pretty sure some lawsuits will come out soon against Sony regarding this problem. They also say to watch out for your sensitive information for your security. They say Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email, asking for your credit card number, social security number or other personally identifiable information. And in the update they go on to say on how to check to make sure your identity is safe etc....

Well, I know this was alot to read even if you only did read some of it but I thought I would get the most Info that I know of out and about so you guy's could see and feel what is going on. I appreciate it very much if you just looked at this thread so you can get a better Idea with things. But some things I would like to see if you guys can post below is...

What do you think/feel about this?

What would you like Sony to do once they get this issue resolved?

Do you think they are taking proper precautions with this issue?

I hope Sony does do something nice and or actually put something into play once the issue is resolved. Like what about PS+ users? I would be pissed about now that is for sure. This has given Sony a big dent and it will for sure take awhile to get out of this hole that they are in. I even saw this one the news so that just tells you how global this is.

Well thank you guys. I just felt Like I should get the information out and about so you guys have a better understanding.
