This is not a copy and paste off another website Ihave done this method myself and can assure you it works. This tutorial will let you downgrade from 3.55 to 3.41 so you can jailbreak your PS3 and play backups/homebrew etc. If you don't have a dongle capable of downgrading, tell me what device you have and I will link you to a PSGrade download for that device.(Or you could just use Google)

Files needed:
Lvl2diag:You must login or register to view this content.

Downgrader:You must login or register to view this content.
Step 1:Insert dongle(Or PSGrade device e.g iPod) that has been programmed with the downgrade software into your PS3.

Step 2:Turn on the console using the same boot method as all other jailbreaks: Press power then immediately press eject. Your console will turn on wait a moment.

Step 3: Remove dongle and turn on console and you are in Factory/Service Mode. You will see a huge red box on the screen saying Factory/Service Mode.

4. Load any blank FAT32 USB flash drive with 2 files in the root directory:

1. Modified 3.41 PUP
2. Lv2Diag.self (File 1)

5. Insert flash drive into the last USB port to the right — the first USB port in from the right side if you’re facing the console. Turn the PS3 on and you will see a black screen but the PS3 HDD light will flash.

6.The process takes 3-4 minutes for the system to install the old firmware. Towards the end, the power button on the console will start flashing green and then your console will power off.

7.Insert USB flash drive back into your PC and delete the PUP and Lv2Diag.self file (File 1) and copy the other Lv2Diag.self (File 2) to the root of the flash drive.

8.Insert USB flash drive back into the same USB port on the PS3 and power on your PS3. After 10 seconds it will power off.

9.Remove USB flash drive and turn on your console again. You will be out of Factory/Service mode and back in retail mode with 3.41 firmware installed.

I have done this method and can tell you it works 100%

i wish someone would answer your question so i can find out if i can downgrade with out anything special. like a FAT32 8GB sandisk flash drive.

you have to be able to emulate the jig, right?

do you have to have it in service mode?
because im on 3.55 and my pen drive picks up 3.41 automaticaly without being in service mode

people i need some serious support here

-I put the file 1 lv2diag and the modified 3.41 PUP in the root of my usb stick
-I shut my ps3 down, inserted the ps3key in the most right port(closesd to the BRD) and turn the main power on.
-I turned it on using power on, then press immediately eject and i got into factory service mode.
-Powered it up to see if it was in factory mode, it was.
-Shut down using the controller, inserted the usb stick with the file 1 lv2diag and the modified 3.41 PUP in the same port as my ps3key was.(The most right port)
Booted my ps3 and nothing happens, it just starts in factory service mode.

AT this moment i am stuck in factory service mode, unable to continue the downgrade of my ps3, and unable to go OUT of factory service mode!

I try'd to put the file 2 on the root of my usb and booted my ps3 butt nothing happens! (it was the only file on the usb and it is FAT32 format)

Really need help with this! Im already stuck in factory mode for the last 48 hours and no one seems to know the answer or they just don't reply.

PLEASE NGU HELP ME! Im totally frustrated and desperate at this moment!

Same here Sam: im on slim ps3 3.55 and i thought since the modified update.pup is 3.56 the ps3 should puck it up, so i put the pup on usb an it did!! i went alway to the end agreement ready to install then backed out as my slim is new lol,,, Can anyone confirm weather the modified pup can be used to downgraid through usual method?? thanks

Try just putting the modified update.pup on usb (downgraider file)
usb/ps3/update/modified.pup
then update via xmb usb storage device let us no how it goes
